If you want a good all rounder...

The 50mm is a camera bag staple for many photographers as it is extremely useful - you can use it for single portraits, group portraits and lifestyle, so it deserves a space in your camera bag. Some 50mm suggestions for you...

Of course, zooms are even more versatile than a prime (although you lose a bit in how low you can stop down to with your aperture) Some "all rounder" zoom suggestions are:

If you shoot a lot of lifestyle...

If Lifestyle photography is your first love, then I recommend that you get a wide angle prime lens (or a 50mm or the zooms as noted above).  You want to get something that allows you to fit more into the frame, and also allows you to stop down your aperture for taking images indoors in low light.

If you love taking portraits....

If you prefer taking portraits, then you are going to want something with a longer focal length to avoid distortion and help get that beautiful creamy backgrounds which many people love to see in portraits.

Remember that anything from the "all rounders" can also be  used for portraits.

If you want to photograph sports or plays

Then you want to go longer! You need something that is going to give you that reach.

Again, these are not just limited to sports - these take wonderful portraits too - here's a sample portrait from the 200mm...

If you fancy Macro work...

Fancy trying something different? How about a macro lens then. They also double up as beautiful portrait lenses.

Remember to check whether the lens works with your camera model - Amazon has a handy little widget that allows you to check whether the lens you are interested in is compatible with your DSLR.
